Arnold "Arny" Young

Arnold "Arny" Young (dr): Club Foot Orchestra: "Clair"

We've just spoken about Dave Young, a trumpeter who was playing with Sun Ra. Now we're moving on from Sun Ra to Un Ra - a monicker which was chosen by "Un-Ra Arnold Young". He's a drummer, now based in Kansas City and running an Arny Young Quartet there.
During the 80's he's been a member of San Francisco's Club Foot Orchestra, which was the house band of the Club Foot, a place where art, punk and jazz could meet and intermingle. He also appeared with Kansas City based improv-group The Malachy Papers.
The piece "Clair" appeared on "Beets - a Collection of Jazz Songs".

Punk and jazz play together nicer than most people think...particularly for us drummers. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Hi Icastico, I'll need to check your drumming work - I might have a good opportunity for that on your blog, right?
Hm, San Francisco / California must have been a very good place to mix punk and jazz in the 80's... This track of Club Foot Orchestra here is not punky at all, but there were so many things going on at that time... Dave Barrett, the alto saxophonist on this song "Clair", he also played on a Dead Kennedys song, along with Bruce Ackley from the Rova Quartet. And then there were bands like Victims Family, Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress of, NoMeansNo - though the latter ones not Californian. And yes, the jazz element in most of the bands that I've just mentioned comes mainly from the drums.
Thanks for your comment!

I saw Sacchrine Trust back in '84...just who I was thinking of...

Have you heard NOMEANSNO's version of Bitches Brew?

Cool stuff.

Thanks for the link, btw.

Yeah, that's cool. I got the album, it's not their best, but still... hmm... lovely ;-) Because these guys are doing covers of Miles Davis and The Ramones on one album - for them it's so natural to put these things together.

Yep. That complementary clash between styles was what drove a lot of what Waltz Bop Shop was doing...

Looking forward to hearing this... but now I've got to prepare for going to a "business trip" tomorrow, so I'll be offline for a while. See you later
